Junctions – Pedestrians Cross first

In this weekly blog, we will discuss the new rules regarding priority at junctions for motorists and pedestrians. It seems that many motorists are unaware of these changes, and it's important to understand and follow them to ensure the safety of everyone on the road.

As of January 2022, the new rule states that at a junction, motorists should give way to pedestrians who are crossing or waiting to cross a road into which or from which the motorists are turning. This means that even if pedestrians are waiting to cross, they have priority over motorists.

Previously, the rule was to give way only if pedestrians had started crossing. However, with the new changes, pedestrians have priority regardless of whether they have started crossing or are waiting to cross. Additionally, the changes emphasise that pedestrians should cross at a place where drivers can see them. This is crucial for both pedestrians and motorists to ensure clear visibility and avoid any accidents.

Therefore, it is important for motorists to be vigilant when turning into or out of a junction. Always watch out for pedestrians and give them the right of way if they are crossing or waiting to cross. By following these rules, we can create a safer environment for everyone on the road.
